{"id":154,"date":"2005-06-01T23:54:03","date_gmt":"2005-06-02T07:54:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.otherthings.com\/grafarc\/blog2\/?p=154"},"modified":"2005-06-01T23:54:03","modified_gmt":"2005-06-02T07:54:03","slug":"graffiti-analysis-by-fi5e","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/grafarc.org\/news\/2005\/06\/graffiti-analysis-by-fi5e\/","title":{"rendered":"Graffiti Analysis by fi5e"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I just need to make a plug for <a target=\"_new\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.ni9e.com\">fi5e<\/a>, a student at Parsons School of Design in NYC who&#8217;s doing some brilliant graffiti-related geekwork.<\/p>\n<p>His <a target=\"_new\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ni9e.com\/graf_taxonomy\/graf_tax_01.html\">Graffiti Taxonomy<\/a> project does with graf what Douglas Hofstadter did with typography in <i>Metamagical Themas<\/i>, and what Bernd and Hilla Becker did with coal tipples and water towers in <i>Typologies<\/i>.  Small multiples rock my world.  (Coincidentally, <a target=\"_new\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/14112399@N00\/\">Adam Greenfield<\/a> has been tracking one of his posters as it <a target=\"_new\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/14112399@N00\/sets\/59803\/\">disintegrates over time<\/a>.  Here&#8217;s a <a target=\"_new\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.ni9e.com\/archives\/2005\/02\/community_graff.html\">detail<\/a> of the same poster from fi5e&#8217;s blog.)<\/p>\n<p>In fi5e&#8217;s most recent and ambitious project, <a target=\"_new\" href=\"http:\/\/a.parsons.edu\/~roth\/thesis\/projection_04_29_05\/index.html\">Graffiti Analysis<\/a>, he tracks a writer&#8217;s movements in 3D using a kind of light pen, manipulates the data, makes crazy videos out of them, and projects them onto walls and monuments.  I think he&#8217;s just scratching the surface as far as what could be done with that data.  But the videos have a tight esthetic quality about them that I like for its own sake.
