{"id":63,"date":"2006-01-07T12:22:57","date_gmt":"2006-01-07T20:22:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.otherthings.com\/grafarc\/blog2\/?p=63"},"modified":"2006-01-07T12:22:57","modified_gmt":"2006-01-07T20:22:57","slug":"timelapse-geology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/grafarc.org\/news\/2006\/01\/timelapse-geology\/","title":{"rendered":"Timelapse Geology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sorry for the lack of updates recently: our server got hacked over the holidays, and it&#8217;s taken us a while to get all the pieces back together again.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s one very cool thing that came to my attention recently: it&#8217;s a <a target=\"_new\" href=\"http:\/\/pruned.blogspot.com\/2006\/01\/geological-investigation-of-alluvial.html\">map of the alluvial valley<\/a> of the Mississippi River, showing how the course of the river has changed over hundreds (thousands?) of years.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_new\" href=\"http:\/\/pruned.blogspot.com\/2006\/01\/geological-investigation-of-alluvial.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=0 src=\"http:\/\/otherthings.com\/grafarc\/images\/mississippi_detail1_small.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Each color represents a different moment in the river&#8217;s long history, and the images are layered up so you can see it all at a glance.  What a great idea!  I wish I could say I came up with it first, but these maps were drawn up by Harold N. Fisk in 1944.
